There are many use cases for Tags in Shopify. Tags aren't displayed to customers by default, but you can use tags to categorize products on your online store and organize search results for customers. You can create a custom set of tags for many sections in Shopify where tags are used but we will be focusing on product tags.
You can add tags when creating or editing products, and you can also remove them.
Adding steps:
- Open the specific product page in Shopify.
- In the Tags section, enter the name of a tag you want to add, or select it from the list of existing tags. If you enter the name for a new tag, then it will automatically be created for future use in the section.
- Click Save.
Removing steps:
- Open the specific product, transfer, customer, blog post, order, or draft order details page in Shopify.
- Click the x next to the tag that you want to remove. The tag is removed only from that specific product.
- Click Save

Adding Custom Tag Filters in Rapid Search
Let's say you added the tags to your products and now you are ready to create your custom tag filters.
- Go to Rapid Search admin, Settings, Filters, then click the "+ Add Filter" button
- Name your filter, Select the desired sort by method, and finally, you can choose from 3 filter option definitions.
- Show all tags: this will display all the tags that have been assigned to the products that are listed on the given search results page.
- Exclude tags: this will exclude all of the tags added here and display all the other tags that have been assigned to the products that are listed on the given search results page.
- Show selected tags only: this will show only the tags you have added here and hide all the other tags that have been assigned to the products that are listed on the given search results page.
- Special cases for "Exclude tags" and "Show selected tags only": To make these two features easier to understand, let's demonstrate them through two examples. When managing product collections in Shopify, especially for seasonal items, tag filters are essential for keeping your store organized. Both "Exclude Tags" and "Show Selected Tags Only" support wildcard characters like the asterisk (*) to represent any string, allowing you to create flexible and dynamic tag rules without needing to list every individual tag.
Example Scenario: Managing Seasonal Collections. Let’s assume that you manage a seasonal collection, and the spring season has just ended. Now, you want to exclude all products tagged with spring-related tags such as spring-collection, spring-sale, and spring-limited. Instead of manually excluding each tag, you can use the wildcard (spring-*) to simplify the process.
- Use Case for "Exclude Tags"
You want to exclude all products related to the spring collection or sale from being shown in a particular view. By using the "Exclude Tags" filter and adding the rule spring-*, you’ll effectively hide any products tagged with any variation starting with "spring" (e.g., spring-collection, spring-sale, etc.). This is useful for managing products across seasons and ensuring outdated collections are no longer visible.
Example:
Let's say you have a Spring collection that has ended, and now you want to remove any visibility of products tagged with spring-collection, spring-sale, and spring-limited. By using spring-* in the Exclude Tags field, you exclude all products with any tag that starts with "spring".
- Use Case for "Show Selected Tags Only"
Alternatively, if you want to display only products from the spring season in a particular collection, you would use the "Show Selected Tags Only" filter. Using the rule spring-* here ensures that only products with spring-related tags (e.g., spring-collection, spring-sale) are shown.
Example:
If you want to show products exclusively related to the spring collection, you can use spring-* to display only items that are tagged with spring-related tags such as spring-collection or spring-limited. This is ideal when you want to create a collection page specifically for that season.
- After setting up everything press Save.
- Refresh your browser and check your storefront. The new custom tag filter should now be visible on your Rapid Search results and collection pages.
